Winter 2018 LOCALadk Magazine 21 LOCALadk One way in which the games provide time and opportunity for the kids to get to know each other is when they are ac- tually not practicing or competing. Local athlete Jesse Izzo, who competed in Innsbruck in 2016, spoke about what made the biggest impression for him—it was this non-competitive time, which allowed the athletes time to connect socially. The Lake Placid Conference Center will be set up as a "home base"—a place the kids can hang out, rest, and visit among themselves. There will be games, entertainment, and team building ac- tivities provided by Experience Outdoors. Good Guy Produc- tions will provide a variety of fun options, including a pho- to booth and life-size Jenga. The Palace Theatre will have a movie night showing Olympic themed classics, such as "Mira- cle on Ice" and "Cool Runnings." Top the night with fireworks over Mirror Lake for a perfect day. The United States Snowshoe Association will have a snow- shoe challenge course on the Olympic Oval, and there will be a scavenger hunt throughout downtown where kids from different cities will be placed on teams to work together. The Wild Center is bringing displays, and will hold demon- strations to teach the kids about the Adirondacks and sus- tainability, and the Wildlife Refuge will be bringing select animals. The opening ceremony will be held on Monday, Januar y 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in the Olympic Center. It will include an athlete parade, contemporar y circus performance by Throw2Catch from Montreal, and an Adiron- dack Children's Choir. This event is open to the public, and all are encouraged to come support the athletes and enjoy the games.
