LOCALadk 31 Rules to Thrive by: Mom sets the pace. You can run the carry if you want, but you're not paddling until the last per- son gets in the boat. Just because you think it, even if it's true, sometimes it's better to just "Shut up and paddle." People have different strengths and weaknesses; respect that and keep your ego out of the boat. The only feedback you should express to your pit crew is "Thank you!" Like so many others, I've recognized that there are a lot of parallels between life on and off the water. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's just plain tough. Sometimes the sun shines and the winds are fair. Sometimes life ser ves you ice-cold rain with a side of horrendous crosswinds on Middle Saranac. Time and miles will pass, sometimes painstakingly slow, other times right before your eyes. Steadily you will move for ward, one paddle stroke, one step, at a time. If you're not paying attention to where you are, where you're headed, or stop to look up, you'll miss the whole reason you're there in the first place. Who knows what inspired Mom to set out in that kayak 20 years ago. Whatever the reason for starting, something is calling us back year after year. For me and my family, The 90 has become less about our finish time and more about the time we get to spend with each other. I wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you to the NYSDEC, Mac, Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and all the volunteers and participants over the years who make this event possible. Until next year!
