42 Winter 2018 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk Driving the vast grassy plains in a Land Cruiser off-road ve- hicle, the mesmerizing sunset's golden rays piercing through the clouds, surrounded by thousands of free-running wild animals, gazing at billions of bright stars and the Milky Way … these are the scenes that play on repeat in my head— even several weeks after my daughter Chloe and I returned from a trip to Kenya. We felt so much freedom in moments like these where nothing else seemed to matter. Photographing wildlife and landscapes is one of my pas- sions; I frequently visit nature preser ves and the Adirondack Park to do so. Travelling around the world is my other pas- sion. My daughter Chloe and I have traveled international- ly together for the last few years, photographing along the way. So going on safari in Kenya was definitely a dream come true for us. There is something magical about the natural beauty in Kenya; its landscape is obviously ver y different from upstate New York where we live, yet, I was amazed to see it in person. I have photographed countless sunrises and sunsets, but nothing like the ones in Kenya. Back in March, a friend sent me a text message about a safari tour package in Kenya. My eyes popped when I saw the trip description and itinerar y. A safari in Africa had been on my bucket list for years. After a few months of preparation, not to mention getting all of the necessar y vaccinations, Chloe and I arrived in Kenya in late August for our ten-day adventure. Our trip started in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Nairobi appeared to be in a phase of fast economic development with infrastructure projects ever ywhere. After a half-day rest in Nairobi, our safari began. During the following nine days, we toured National Parks within a several hundred ki- lometer radius of Nairobi, including Anboselli National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Borgoria, and of course, the world renowned Massai Mara National Park. The first park we visited was Anboselli in southern Kenya. It is known for its abundance of elephants and outstand- ing view of Mount Kilimanjaro. At Anboselli National Park, countless wild animals came close to our vehicle, including zebras, elephants, lions, and ostrich, among others.
