Winter 2018 LOCALadk Magazine 7 LOCALadk Message From The Editor Producing a magazine gives us the chance to meet and work with some great people. It offers us the chance to pick and choose which interesting and inspiring stories to work on and share with you, our readers. At times it also lets us tr y new things, taste delicious food, and see some beautiful sights. The magazine also gives us the opportunity to help make a difference through the stories we share. We take that responsibility seriously, and are committed to making more of an effort to share stories that support all of the people who love the Adirondacks for one reason or another. Diversity has become a popular topic in the Adirondacks lately, and we recently attended a conference in Lake Placid sponsored by The Travel Unity. We wanted to learn more about how diversity in the park is seen, felt, and heard by minority groups. We wanted to learn what some organizations are doing to help grow, embrace, and sup- port diversity. What we found is that we have some work to do. Examples were shared of people in the minority visiting the Adirondacks and not feeling welcome. We heard from leaders of the Adirondack Diversity Initiative who are developing and promoting strategies to help the region become more welcoming and inclusive. Another organization, Adirondack Diversity Solutions, is working on ways to help bring diversity to the workforce. We were inspired by what we heard, and when given the opportunity to support diversity we will act on it. In a time where much of what we read or see in print can be less than inspiring, we hope LOC ALadk gives you a chance to take a break and enjoy the pages in our winter issue. We can only improve if you let us know how we are doing. Please email us at info@localadk.com with comments. We continue to be humbled by the support and interest of our readers, stor ytellers, photographers, and adver- tisers. Our Keeping It LOC AL campaign for this issue is the local area food banks. We are happy to support them, and thank them for their work in providing for those in need. Happy winter, Anne Brewer Editor/Owner
