Kahtoola MICROspikes, Hillsound Trail Crampon Ultra, and Snowline's Chainsen Pro Models If you recreate in the Adirondacks during the winter and early spring, we recommend investing in some type of ice traction system for your feet. Icy conditions are frequent on most hikes, and traction devices can aid in your success on reaching the summit safely. We field tested MICROspikes from Kahtoola, the Trail Crampon Ultra from Hillsound, and the Chainsen line-up from Snowline. All of which are de- scribed as ice traction systems that are easily worn over most boots and can be tossed in a pack or pocket for easy access. The top half of each device is made of rubber or elastomer that should snugly fit over your boots, and the bottom is a series of small chains and metal spikes that give you the trac- tion needed for icy surfaces. Hillsound adds an extra strap that goes along the top of your foot for a slightly snugger fit. The Ultra model offers lots of flexibility and is lighter than most, making it popular for those who like to minimize weight. The Chainsen models by Snowline offer a variety of styles based on preference and use. The models include the Pro, Light, and Ultra. The Pro model is their best seller, and is most like the other models we tried. The Light has slightly thinner elastomer, as well as a thinner steel chain and spike gauge, but that did not seem to compromise grip. The Ultra has aggressive front points intended for heavier use. All of the devices we tested work great on flat, slick trails, as well as for moderately steep mountain hiking. The level of confidence we felt with the spikes is what sold us on the idea of using this type of traction system. Another great use is for ice fishing, or any situation where there might be an icy approach. Kahtoola MICROspikes, Hillsound Crampons, and the Chainsen line by Snowline are sold in many Adirondack out- door shops, and are all products that we highly recommend. Prices var y slightly depending on where you are shopping and which model you chose. Cheaper versions can be found online, but we cannot verif y the quality. A traction system can make the difference between staying on your feet or possibly landing on your ass this winter. Do your own re- search and choose the pair that best fits your needs. Quality matters in this case. *For winter climbers looking to tackle the higher peaks we recommend using a more aggressive crampon system, and/ or perhaps taking a winter mountaineering course.
