Winter 2019 LOCALadk Magazine 47 LOCALadk OTHER KEY SWAP POSSIBILITIES While the Avalanche Pass traverse is the most obvious— and scenic— candidate for a key swap, there are some other good ski tours that would use less fuel and reduce the time spent in a vehicle by arranging a key swap. Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area— Route 8 to Old Farm Clearing near Thirteenth Lake and Garnet Hill Lodge: This nearly 11-mile traverse would require about 90 miles of driv- ing to set up a shuttle. Most of the skiing is relatively easy, but skiers heading south do have a challenging half-mile fin- ish to reach Route 8. Hoffman Notch —This 7 1/2-mile traverse requires nearly 60 miles of driving to set up a shuttle. The skiing is relatively easy throughout now that Hoffman Notch Brook has been bridged at one point and a reroute has bypassed two oth- er problematic crossings. One could extend the skiing by 4 1/2 miles (and slightly shorten the driving) by starting and finishing at the Big Pond trailhead just a short distance up Hoffman Road from Route 9 in Schroon Lake.
