Winter 2019 LOCALadk Magazine 7 LOCALadk Message From The Editor Winter arrived early, but with 8 inches of quality snow I didn't mind. Skis were still hibernating, I had no idea where the snowbrush was, my kayak was still accessible, but winter was here. November is usually my least fa- vorite month, but the new snow was making it more than bearable. I woke up my skis and happily made my first tracks. Yes winter in the Adirondacks is historically a ver y long season but, I say let it snow. Our latest issue embraces winter and shares local stories that will hopefully have you excited for what's to come. We hear from a long-time local skier about the fun and possible mishaps of a group xc ski adventure, as well as getting a first look at the upgraded ski jumps where athletes will soon be soaring. Delicious food is always a part of the magazine's core, and this issue will introduce you to local chef Curtiss Hemm and his sought- after cooking classes, along with recipes for superfood hot beverages from our partner Green Goddess. Stories about people have been some of our more popular pieces, and in this issue we share what one town librar y has created in order to preser ve and tell the stories of hundreds of locals. This is a project I hope inspires other towns to follow in the footsteps of Keene Valley and start to record thousands of more stories to be told and retold for genera- tions. Lake George brings us ice —lots of ice —in the form of ice bars, art, and even games. Keep a weekend free in Februar y to experience this ver y 'cool' event. Our Epic Journey takes you to Nor way and Sweden, and a local Olympian reminds us how important climate change is. Our calendar section is full of fun events from winter carnivals to sports events to cultural activities for the family. Take a look and maybe experience a new area and event—if you haven't seen the St. Patty's parade in Old Forge you are missing out for sure. How about a Polar Plunge into Long Lake or enjoying a drink ser ved from a bar made of pure ice? Embrace winter and go play in the snow! Thank you for reading our magazine. We are proud to be able to create a product that is enjoyed by so many, and for FREE. To help us out please follow us on Facebook and Instagram. The power of social media is real. We are happy to make a donation through our Keeping it LOC AL campaign to Protect Our Winter (POW). Happy winter, Editor/Owner Anne Brewer
