picturesque harborside city filled with vividly hued houses,
numerous museums and a fish market filled with just about
ever ything that lives in the sea. We made a game of seeing
who could find the strangest-looking fish, and it ended in a
tie. Even if you don't like to eat seafood, this market is still
worth visiting. Bergen is home to a UNESCO World Heritage
site. The old wharf is a reminder of the town's importance as
part of the Hanseatic League's trading empire from the 14th
to the mid-16th centur y. The structures are mostly wooden
and have, unfortunately, been ravaged by fires over time.
Many of the structures have been rebuilt using traditional
methods and patterns, and today some 62 buildings remain.
Walking through the narrow rows surrounded by such an-
tiquity gives one pause to appreciate the histor y associated
with this port. You can imagine the Viking ships that moored
in the bay here over 1,000 years ago.
Nor way is a countr y filled with opportunities for adven-
ture, and the people are warm and welcoming. The countr y
is serious about tourism and invests in making a visit to Nor-
way safe, inviting and full of histor y and hospitality. I defi-
nitely feel as though I saw just the tip of the iceberg (as they
say), and I know I will return to further explore this amazing
countr y.
