SCOTT Scott Mierop is a long-time Adirondack native, visiting since 1969 and living within the Blue Line for the past 14 years. After a long career in the corporate world of marketing and sales, he escaped. He's an avid outdoor enthusiast, and enjoy's mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking and skiing, and has been an alpine ski racing coach. He's also been a pilot and loves to fly. He devotes the majority of his time to LOCALadk Magazine as publisher and editor, and can often be seen with his black & tan Dachsund, Gary. ANNE LOCALadk | Inside Anne Brewer lives in Lake Clear with her fiancé, his daughter, and their dog Juni. She is an avid outdoor sports enthusiast, kayaker, hiker, skier and traveler. She has a passion for Central and South America and enjoys visiting places that are off the beaten path. Anne earned a degree in International Business and Communications from SUNY Brockport. In addition to being the Managing Editor for LOCALadk, Anne works as the Director of Sales for Mountain Communications radio, guides for Adventures in Good Company, and operates her own summer business; Placid Waters Kayaking. NATE Nate Ball is 9 years old and a fourth grader in Mrs. Mendelsohn's class at Lake Placid Elementary School. He lives in Lake Placid with his parents and Bernese Mountain Dog Sasha. Nate's favorite sports are soccer, telemark and Nordic skiing, and cross country running. He also plays lacrosse in the spring. In the summer, when he is not hiking the mountains of the Adirondacks, he is canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping, mountain biking, rock climbing and running. His favorite color is green. His favorite subject is gym with his favorite teacher Mr. Young. MATT HELEN Helen Smith Cairns is Professor Emerita at the City University of New York (CUNY). She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psycholinguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. Adult sentence processing and first language acquisition in children are her primary areas of research. She taught for over thirty years at Queens College (in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders) and the CUNY Graduate Center, has published six books (with another underway), numerous research papers, and has directed 21 doctoral dissertations. She also served as Department Chair and as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. Helen lives in Ray Brook with her husband Chuck and (seriously adorable) Shih Tzu Leander. Matt Young has called Lake Placid his home since 2004. He strives to achieve a balance between his passion for the outdoors and his treasured role as physical education teacher at Lake Placid Elementary School. When Matt is not teaching he can be found paddling, skiing, or riding his bike. He usually brings a camera with him, and loves to write about his adventures when he returns home. Editors Note: At the time of our final edit, Matt and Friends are skiing Chamonix, France during Spring Break. JONATHAN Johnathan Esper is an Adirondack native and full time outdoor photographer. He specializes in panoramic landscape photography, especially of the Adirondack region, Iceland, and the aurora borealis, and panoramic adventure photography for stock uses. Johnathan also leads photography tours, workshops and personal outings in the Adirondack region and is a staff instructor with the Adirondack Photography Institute. He spends part of each year leading international photo tours to Iceland and New Zealand. He is currently involved in a long-term project of photographing panoramas from the tops of trees he ascends on forested hills, for new and unique views over the Adirondacks. He has also backpacked, skied, photographed, mountaineered, and travelled for years through some of our world's great wilderness landscapes and mountain regions including Patagonia, New Zealand, Iceland, Tasmania, Scandinavia, Alaska and the Andes and Himalaya mountain ranges. Johnathan is published frequently in all the Adirondack region's publications, and around the world by myriad clients, and is also represented by Aurora Photos and Getty Images.
