LOCALadk | Bike Floyd: Sure you can! I have a Spot GPS device. When I hit the button, it sends a GPS signal of my exact location which updates on a Google Map. Everyone who donates receives this link and you can follow me daily. It also comes in very handy if I was ever in need of emergency assistance. I can hit a button, and my location is broadcast to emergency services. My wife Martha, who is my biggest supporter, and oversees the day-to-day of this operation while I'm on the road, made me get a mobile phone for the trip. LOCALadk: 100% of the funds from pledges and donations for this ride are going to help out the local Tri-Lakes Humane Society. They don't have a sprinkler system and are in desperate need. Every dollar raised will be used towards the sprinkler project to protect the animals and building in case of a fire. Is it too late to help out? How can people donate? Good luck, have fun, and be safe! u The weekend begins on Friday, when spectators will enjoy incredible stunts, jumps, and tricks at the Jump Jam and Trials exhibition at the Wilmington Bike Park, followed by the 3rd annual welcome party, featuring music, raffles, prizes, and the competitive "Best Calves" contest. Saturday June 15 features the 12th Annual Whiteface Mountain Uphill Bike Race beginning at 8:00 a.m. The race is part of the BUMPS (Bike Up the Mountain Point) series that consists of ten races on mountains of the Northeast on courses of varying lengths and pitches. The day also includes a vendor expo, music food, children's activities and demo bikes, as well as free group rides and "Poor Man's downhill". All are welcome as the day rounds up with a Bike Fest Beach Party with live music, food, and contests. Sunday's action features the 3rd Annual Wilmington/Whiteface 100k Race, which takes place with a shotgun start at 7:00 a.m. The 100k race is a qualifier for the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race. For mountain bikers who like high elevation racing on the most rugged of terrain, the Leadville Trail 100 is the holy grail. As it is one of the most well-known mountain bike races, getting into the Leadville Trail 100 has always been difficult.One way to get in is by racing in one of the six 2012 LT100 Qualifiers across the country, each offering 100 total qualifying starting positions. From start to finish, the WW100's course is as varied as the cyclists competing from the eastern United States and Canada. The race both begins and ends at Whiteface Mountain, but in between, the 69-mile long race will take competitors up and down and twisting LOCALadk Magazine Spring 2013 27
