LOCALadk | Epic Journey and ceremonial center, and it served as a stronghold for leaders of the Inca resistance. It dates from the late 15th century and has some of the oldest continuously occupied dwellings in South America. For our team, it gave us our first heart pumping and heavy breathing experience as we climbed some of its hundreds of steps and were reminded of why we were taking the time to acclimatize. The energy at breakfast the next day was one of excitement and anticipation as we packed our gear and readied ourselves to begin the journey to our first lodge and our first look at the gorgeous snow covered mountain, Salkantay. The journey, as do most adventures in South America, involved a drive over rough, winding, and often steep roads with the jaw dropping, eye popping precipitous drops below. Some were keen to look, others opted to be A Local and very photogenic Peruvian Boy told when it was safe to open their eyes and Silver just laughed. MLP does things with style. After hiking for a few hours we, came upon our first lodge which would be home for two nights. Having done this same trip last year, I enjoyed watching the reaction on people's faces as they took in the view up the valley to Salkantay and then back to our cozy lodge. "Is this where WE stay" was the question asked, "yes, and this is the wonderful staff that will make our stay even better." They were greeted by six well-dressed, friendly staff members who smiled and held out hot mugs of coca tea, welcoming us in. We were to be greeted and treated this way for the rest of the trip.
