26 Fall 2020 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk Make it Happen When To Go Summer: Roughly June to September. Ice- bergs are best in June and July, but last longer here than in any other part of Newfoundland. Whales peak in July and August. In mid-June we had lots of icebergs and no mosquitoes, but few whales. The workers at the inn rec- ommended mid-July as the best time to see both whales and icebergs. Getting There Fly: Flying into the Deer Brook Airport is your best bet, and direct flights from Toronto and Halifax are offered daily. Drive: From Deer Brook, rent a car and take the 5-hour drive north to the tiny settlement of Quirpon. Some of the many possible con- venient and scenic stops along the way in- clude Gros Morne National Park, The Arches Provincial Park, the wreck of the SS Ethie, Port au Choix, and the L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site. If short on time, it's also possible to fly to St. Anthony, an hour from Quirpon, but flights are limited and are likely to have several connections. Boat: To complete your triple crown of transportation methods, hop on a Zodiac boat at the dock in Quirpon and embark on the roughly 5-mile boat ride to the dock on the north side of Quirpon Island. The Zodi- ac transportation is included in the booking, which will be made through Linkum Tours. Linkum also offers package tours where they take care of booking a rental car for you, as well as any hotels or other excursions before or after your stay on Quirpon Island. Helpful Tips • Prepare for variable weather: expect sun, rain, wind, and fog—sometimes all in the same day! • Pack light, as space on the Zodiac is lim- ited. • Bring slippers or sandals to wear in the inn, as boots/shoes worn outside must be re- moved before entering. •Book daily Zodiac tours in advance to en- sure you get a spot on the boat. • All meals are included while at the inn, but beer, wine, and liquor are extra.
