50 Fall 2020 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk At Green Goddess, we have a responsibility to provide our Adirondack community with the most consciously chosen prod- ucts possible. We start with local growers and producers and move outward. Check out the Green Goddess Local Food Web on our entrance wall. Some of our ingredients come from other parts of the countr y and world. We have the opportunity to select products that are mindfully produced by people who care for the land and pay fair wages to their employees. Many of the "exotic" foods we sell—like chia seeds, quinoa, chocolate, coconut, sugar, acai, coffee, Himilayan salt, teas, and spices—are far from local. We are able to support cooperatives and minority businesses globally while providing our customers with international in- gredients. It's a small but significant role we play in the global food justice system. While some aspects of social inequality seem over whelming to shift, the food system is one of the most powerful tools we can use immediately to offer assistance to mistreated and under valued populations in our countr y and beyond. Ever y purchase we make affects somebody, often many people. Look for Certified B Corporation and Fair Trade Certified labels on products to know you are benefitting someone with your purchase. Research the companies whose products you use most, and find ones that have a mission statement that includes environmental sustainability and human rights activism. Make ever y dollar count toward a more just and equitable future for ever y human being. The recipe for this issue was inspired by my favorite sweet treat while living part-time in Belize for 16 years. There, I bought homemade chocolate from farmers at the local market. I picked fresh bananas off the tree and even made coconut milk from scratch! Here in the Adirondacks, I rely on Certified B Corporations and Fair Trade companies to ensure that the people who har- vest our bananas and grind our cacao into chocolate are able to feed their families, own their homes, and send their children to school. I want to ensure that they have a chance to thrive. This recipe is dedicated to them. Together We Rise. Together We Rise By Wynde Kate Reese Photos by Jessica Chevalier
