We pay great attention to the beauty of this region. That
is abundantly clear from the constant stream of photos
from this region filling social media accounts. But as the
poet, Mar y Oliver, wrote, "Attention without feeling, I be-
gan to learn, is only a report. An openness—an empathy—
was necessar y if the attention was to matter."
The Adirondacks cannot simply be used and abused, a
space for our rejuvenation or a backdrop for our photo,
with an outright disregard for that empathy it so requires
and demands from us. To ascend any of the endless peaks
the Adirondacks offer, to look out upon the endless sea of
mountaintops cascading into the horizon as we disappear
into relative insignificance, is to recognize there is some-
thing in this world that is greater than ourselves. So, too,
must we release our sense of self-entitlement, the belief
that we are somehow more important than the ground we
walk upon and can therefore treat it as such without hesi-
tation. While so much in this world is beyond our control,
disposing of your garbage is an easy, tangible way to con-
tribute towards the resolution needed for this particular
problem.
As Muir's words remind us, the mountains are selfless.
They open themselves to us, invite us to join them. They are
always calling, and we must go. But when we do, we must
go with an empathetic heart and a willingness to bestow
that same selflessness unto them.
