We crossed Middle as the winds died down, and paddled into the river from Middle to Lower. is section can be glorious, the saturated colors of fall stunning us as we rounded each sinuous bend. Race rules require that you carry your boat around the two locks, the first into Lower Saranac Lake and the second into Oseetah Lake. On this journey, we visited with the lock tenders and helped them operate the gates while swapping stories about the crazy things that can happen during the race. Once past the locks, it was home sweet home for several of us, as just around the corner is Lake Flower and the finish line. No crowds greeted us, nor did the booming voice of Brian McDonnell megaphone our names as we crossed the finish line, but a barking dog, a couple of loved ones, and our faithful pit crew were there taking photos of our completion. We paddled and portaged the 90 miles at a relaxed pace, and saw and experienced a lot more than we would have otherwise. Our Mock 90 will always be etched in our memories for the year that we kept tradition and friendship alive. Hope to see LOCALadk readers come out and support the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and the Adirondack Watershed Alliance for the 90 Miler. Come as a spectator, competitor, pit crew or volunteer and we will see you at the start line.
