( A N D O T H E R P A D D L E S T O E X P L O R E ) A paddling trip is the perfect way to enjoy cooler temperatures and see changing leaves this fall. Getting a close look at the water and wildlife offers a truly immersive Adirondack experience. If you are planning on hitting the water, research and preparation are key. Before leaving home, check the weather. Take note of where you will park, launch, and areas where you might run into hazards or obstacles. Review paddling safety and remember the essentials, including a PFD (personal floatation device), a map, food and water, sun and insect protection, a whistle, a light, and extra layers. Pack everything in a waterproof or "dry" bag. Share your planned route with a trusted friend or family member and stick to the plan once you are on the water. For more information on paddling safety visit: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/100898.html In addition to preparing yourself, help protect our Adirondack waters. Invasive species can cause habitat degradation and loss. You are the first and most effective line of defense against their spread. Canoes, kayaks, paddles, and water equipment should be washed between uses and before entering different water systems. Invasive plants can wrap around paddles or fishing equipment. Invasive insects and other animals can attach to the bottoms of boats or other gear. If you find invasive species, dispose of them properly. For more information on aquatic invasive species and what you can do to help, visit: https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/265.html e Osgood Bog paddle is my personal favorite Adirondack paddle and is a trip that my family will remember for decades. It is a full day out and back trip, so be realistic about your arm strength when planning for your party. Go as far as you want, just remember that you will be paddling upstream on the way back. ere is a hand launch on the lily pad–laden Jones Pond, located on Jones Pond Road off Route 86.
