you can always ask for clarification ofproduct sources.
Finally, farmers' markets can teach you to eat with the seasons. With
the proliferation of grocery stores and produce imports from around
the globe, that's a long forgotten skill. We can buy any food at any time
because it's probably in season somewhere in the world. But there's a
certain anticipatory joy in waiting for the first ripe local strawberries,
tomatoes or sweet corn, and having something on a limited basis
heightens the pleasure when it arrives. Learn to appreciate what
our local agriculture can accomplish; farming in the Adirondacks is a
challenge, and climate change is not making it easier. Many farmers
are now using season extension techniques so that we can enjoy some
foods earlier in the spring and later into the fall. It's still local and very
fresh.
Adirondack Harvest is a program of Cornell Cooperative Extension,
Essex County, and is a regional organization dedicated to connecting
local farmers and consumers in the North Country. The program
provides marketing support and promotion for over 200 members
across thirteen counties. For current dates, times and locations of
farmers markets visit www.adirondackharvest.com. R
