Aside from its breathtaking views and tremendous water clarity, Lake George is also one of the healthiest fisheries in our area. Ice anglers near and far eagerly await the first chance to "walk on top" of this magnificent lake every year. is will typically occur around the first week of February, depending on a variety of weather factors. e most popular target species are lake trout, yellow perch, and landlocked salmon. Lake trout and yellow perch are a fairly common catch, as the populations are large and they tend to be willing to cooperate when you present a bait to them. Both species are typically jigged with so plastics or spoons tipped with a chunk of baitfish or a maggot to sweeten the deal. Perch can be found in large flats in the 30-40-foot depth range and love to hang out over perch grass, which is a long grassy type of aquatic vegetation that grows all over the bottom of Lake George. ey can be found in massive schools. e key to finding a nice perch is to take a mobile approach. Move, move, move! If you aren't immediately into fish, just keep moving. If you are catching fish but they lack size, once again, move! e larger fish will generally school with fish of equal size, so mobility is key. Lake trout can be found just about anywhere in the lake. Jigging and covering water will put you on more fish. I like to work the shallower waters early and slide out to slightly deeper flats later in the morning. Landlocked salmon are a bit more elusive, as their populations are fewer, but can be found cruising under the ice just about anywhere in the lake. ey are targeted by using tip-ups rigged with small trebles and very light fluorocarbon leader. Lastly, please consider catch and release, as we have a 100% self-sustaining lake trout fishery that has not required stocking by the state in decades. Both lake trout and salmon are extremely vulnerable during the ice fishing season because the number of lines each angler is allowed to use is very liberal. is in conjunction with the use of live bait makes these fish easy targets. ey are eating machines!
