LOCALadk 19 Some of our favorite day trips are to Buttermilk Falls, Little Blue, Newcomb, Lake Placid, and anywhere in St. Lawrence County. Frequently we take a trip to the Norridgewock in Beaver River. The only way in to Beaver River in the winter is by hiking, skiing, or snowmobiling. At the Norridgewock Lodge, we warm up with some hot chocolate as we catch up with the owners, Scott, Ginger, Mark, and Rusty, some of the friendliest people we know. Then, on the way home, we like to stop at the Stillwater Inn to have a slice of Marian's famous peanut butter pie. During Covid, when many establishments were closed, we started to pack our lunches and found a place to stop and eat on the trails. There were some days when the weather was perfect and we found a log to sit on and enjoy our lunch. Other times, we had to eat quickly so we could get our hands back in our gloves and fire up our snowmobiles to start the hand warmers. Believe it or not, as long as we have on the right clothing, we barely ever get too cold when we are out riding. Some days it's just the four of us in our riding group, but at times we have had up to 20. Just two years ago we mapped out a trip with 14 friends and family members with a planned final destination of Pete's Peak in Old Forge. The view of the Fulton Chain of lakes is just beautiful from there. To the surprise of many in the group, as we were getting ready to head back down the mountain, our friend Zack got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend, Leah, to marry him. What a beautiful day that was. By Suzie Wickes, Sally Gangell, Lori Scheuermann & Lauren Beach Kurt Gardner Photo
