LOCALadk 9 A M E S S A G E F R O M A N N E LOCALadk Welcome to winter and all that it brings us here in the Adirondacks. For some people, it is the season they look forward to the most, for others, it's time to pack up and head south and leave it behind altogether. Well, for those who are still here or are planning to visit the Adirondacks this winter, there are so many great events planned and opportunities to revel in the joy of winter. For more than two years, Lake Placid has been gearing up to host the 2023 FISU Winter World Univer- sity Games, taking place January 12-22. Winter sports venues have received upgrades, rebuilds, and in a few cases, brand-new venues. The games bring some 2,500 athletes and coach- es from 50 countries, representing 600 universities. They will compete in 12 different sports and 86 medal events. There are still opportunities to volunteer, which is a great way to become involved and enjoy the games yourself. Events will be spread throughout several other Adirondack towns, including Saranac Lake, Pots- dam, Canton, and North Creek. LOCALadk encourages you to get involved and enjoy them. We have had fun creating this issue for you, thanks to the many great submissions and other stories we have been working on for some time. Our goal is to create fresh content that is interesting, educational, and inspiring. The Adirondacks are blessed with many talented art- ists. We were lucky enough to connect with two who have shared their stories and samples of their work. An Adirondack mom offers some tricks on how to keep your kids engaged and loving the outdoors this win- ter. We pay tribute to a ski queen and hear from four adventurous friends about how much fun you can have while snowmobiling. As the popularity of back-country skiing grows, we turned to the newly formed Adiron- dack Community Avalanche Project and asked them to speak about their objectives and goals. Our travel piece, Epic Journey, takes us back to the '70s, when a local Adirondack guide, Wayne Failing, climbs the Mat- terhorn in Switzerland. Famed chef and food writer Paul Sorgule talks with local chefs about what makes a great pizza and where in the Park can you find the best; their answers might surprise you. These stories and more fill the pages of our latest issue. We hope you enjoy it, and as always, encourage you to support local businesses whenever possible. It is with the continued support from so many great businesses that we are able to bring you LOCALadk. Happy Winter, Anne Editor
