LOCALadk 7 A M E S S A G E F R O M R H I A N N O N LOCALadk While most Eastern calendars consider January to be the month marking new beginnings, September has frequently marked the start to a "new year" in my life. Having been involved in the world of education since the age of three, September triggers the reality of a newness that has arrived. It is a time appropriately marked by the popping colors of autumn leaves, the visual feast of fall foliage waiting to put on a show at any moment amongst the Adirondack peaks and valleys. With all things new exists the promise of change, a concept at the forefront of my mind as I settle into my new role as editor of LOCALadk Magazine in its elev- enth year of publication. Changing routines, chang- ing clocks, changing wardrobes, changing seasons — change is seemingly everywhere. Lines from the beloved poem "September" by Helen Hunt Jackson frequent my mind in celebration of this time of year: "The golden-rod is yellow; The corn is turning brown; The trees in apple orchards With fruit are bending down… By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer…" On any occasion during which I find myself uneasy from the prospect of change — something we have all experienced at one time or another — I simply look to the mountains. One of my favorite aspects of the Adirondacks is simply how they were formed — a mound of old rock uplifted 20 million years ago slowly undergoing glacial erosion over the course of several million years. In these moments of evolution and newness, I look to the mountains and am reminded of the beauty change reveals to us, a beauty that begs to be em- braced. My husband Eric and I hope you enjoy this issue's stories surrounding the old, the new, and the ever-changing. As always, we encourage you to support the wonder- ful and talented local business throughout the Adiron- dacks whenever possible. It is through the continued support of local businesses that we are able to bring LOCALadk to you and yours as a free publication. Rhiannon Wishing you a happy fall, Editor
