The Shine in the Washing
By Lucy Thill
(Senior; Saranac Lake High School)
My family can recognize
Ourselves in each other's faces
And still hate mirrors.
I can wash
The same ceramic bowl
Nine perfect times
Until the curves of its surface are mirrors
And still the edges of it smile at me.
Obsession runs in the family.
When we get together, we count
Squares
Boxes
Windows
Escape routes
I stand at the sink
Under the mirror
Wash until I'm shiny
And reflective
A kitchen is the best place
To meet my family in.
I did this on purpose;
I want you to taste this love like a ripe tomato,
Shining in the pan.
My family, gathered at the sink
You can't see through the soapy water
But we are holding hands.
We create our own small victories:
Tonight, I will sleep above the blankets,
Give myself somewhere warmer to go.
Will you come back tomorrow morning and
Join us for breakfast?
Creative Corner
The "Creative Corner" is new to LOCALadk, but it's an idea we've been dreaming about for some time. The vi-
sion is simple: we want to highlight the talented creative writers and artists in our region. Here's how it works:
Every season, we will put up a call on Facebook and Instagram for creative writers and artists to submit an
independently created piece surrounding a theme. Our team will select pieces to publish, and we will do it all
again the following season!
