Maple Syrup
By Sean Platt
March pulls at winter.
Sap spilling into
Metal pails.
Bit lifted, chrome
gleaming towards heaven,
brought back to earth.
Rounds halved,
splintered, and lurching.
A match skips and sizzles.
Sulfuric light leaping,
catching coils of birch.
Letting them crackle–
popping and hissing.
Twists of sooty smoke
purl upward.
The soft, glowing roar
of adopted flame
leaks from loose edges.
Calescent basins roil
in silver corners,
raising heads of foam.
Plaits of steam list
torrid and cloying
above auric oceans.
At two nineteen
smooth veins of amber
slip the spigot.
A good goad
of spoons and
we let the rest to cool.
Creative Corner
The "Creative Corner" is new to LOCALadk, but it's an idea we've been dreaming about for some time. The
vision is simple: we want to highlight the talented creative writers and artists in our region.
For our upcoming summer issue, we invite creative writers and artists to submit an independently created
piece involving summer's chosen concept: "water." We accept poetry, fiction, or non-fiction 200 words or less
in addition to artwork. Our team will select pieces to publish. Send submissions to info@localadk.com
By the fire, I listen,
hearing the timbre
of wilted coals
and our voices
speaking
our sounds.
Telling
the language
of father and son.
