Two grouse scuttled past my car, A pheasant, and the chickadees Were battling so hard, A feather floated past. The juncos came in for two days Eating the scattered birdseed on the ground, and left Before I realized they were gone. Down by the river two pairs Of geese, newly arrived, searched for a good Nesting spot The same they come to every year. I treasure them like friends. That night a flock of geese flew by So low I could hear the rush of their wings Pulsing and syncopated for a second And their honking, giving me hope- Like bird electricity when The barred owl called out so loud, And clear in the night- It even made the peepers silent for a minute.
