We are holding many in our hearts as we collectively continue to mourn the loss of Robbi Mecus. Robbi was a
force of strength, love, resolve, and hope within our tight-knit community and beyond. She was everything all
at once: climber, conservationist, ranger, traveler, parent, friend, ally, and mentor.
Robbi's career as a forest ranger with the NYS DEC for over twenty-five years is one of the many marks she
left in our community, earning the respect of fellow rangers and outdoor enthusiasts seemingly everywhere
she went. Our magazine's co-founder, Anne Brewer, perhaps put it best when she stated, "I always said...if I'm
ever in need of a rescue, make sure Robbi is there."
A proud trans woman, Robbi gave hope and visibility to many, remaining a role model, mentor, and ally to
the LGBTQIA+ community throughout her life. Between this, her dedication to serving others, and her infinite
love of the outdoors and everyone she met, Robbi's heart was greater than the mountains. We carry her in our
hearts today and the days to come.
We send our greatest hopes for healing and recovery to Robbi's climbing partner, Melissa Orzechowski, who
is healing from the severe injuries they sustained. Melissa, we are with you in every way.
GoFundMe campaigns have been set up to help both Robbi's family as well as Melissa's
ongoing medical expenses. Please consider donating.
