All winter long the dead man moaned And waited for the thaw. He strained to swing his trusty axe And rubbed his knuckles raw. The chasm stayed in ice all spring, But June his arm broke free. He blindly swung the sharpened blade And sliced off half his knee. He also lost a rubber boot And two frostbitten toes. But still he hacked away at ice And shred his woolen clothes." "I think the temperature has dropped; The chill's gone to my toes. I'll duck inside the tent a sec And throw on extra clothes." Inside her sleeve she hides a spork; The tent is short a stake.
