Regaining the Title Story by Connie Perry Photos by Barry Lobdell W e hope to regain our place in the Guiness Book of World Records when "One Square Mile of Hope" returns to Inlet, N.Y., for the THIRD time on September 13th, 2014, to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The goal of the event is to gather as many canoes, kayaks and guide boats as possible. We set the record in 2011 with 1,902. But our record was beaten last August by Suttons Bay in Michigan, so we are back to blow those numbers "right out of the water." Through our partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Old Forge, we are also hoping to break our record of fundraising for breast cancer research and have our sights set on the $100,000 threshold. The name of the event refers to its goal, to fill a square mile with boats, and to hope that breast cancer research will continue to make strides in fighting the disease. You can help us achieve these goals in several ways. You can be a participant in breaking the record by going to our website www.onesquaremileofhope.org and registering on our secure site. Don't forget to bring friends! Groups of ten or more have a special process which is also detailed on our website. Another way to be involved is to become a sponsor by donating money, products, or services that help with the running of the event , or are available in the Silent Auction. There is information available on the website to help you with that process. Other forms of sponsorship may include the donation of clean, well-maintained canoes and kayaks for use by participants without boats, or adopt-a- paddler by pre-paying a registration for a student or someone who might not otherwise be able to participate. You may participate in the Health and Wellness Fair (with committee approval), by offering free information, demonstrations, or services for healthful living and playing. The Fair takes place at Arrowhead Park immediately following the raft-up portion of the event. We are working to create an informative and fun wellness event. However, no sales beyond our fundraising activities will be allowed. Music and healthy food will be available for all to enjoy. Choose to support One Square Mile of Hope by buying tickets for our boat raffle. A custom- trimmed Placid Boats Rapidfire, an ultra-light Eddyline Samba kayak with custom paddle, and the award-winning Necky Eliza "women's kayak" have all been generously donated by our paddlesports sponsors. Buy one ticket for $10 or three for $25 to have a chance at winning one of these three incredible crafts. Tickets are currently available for purchase on the website, through the Inlet Information office, at Frisky Otter Tours in Inlet, and Grey Ghost Bicycles in Glens Falls. They will be available at many area events taking place throughout the spring and summer in the Inlet and Old Forge area. This is Placid Boatwork's and Necky Kayak's THIRD donation of a boat to this event! Kudos and much gratitude! Finally, Volunteering for committee work, spreading the word, selling boat raffle tickets, packing goodie bags, helping to set up for the event, helping at the various launch points, and serving food are a few of the many ways you can help make this event a huge success. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Sign up on-line or call the Information office at 315-357-5501.
