New York Wildlife
Viewing Guide
Published by Adventure Publications, 2012
Recommendation by LOCALadk staff
The Adirondacks, as well as
many locations throughout
New York State, are home
to many different wild
animals. The Department of
Environmental Conservation
in association with the Nature
Conservancy, Audubon New
York, NYC Parks Department,
Empire State Development,
and the Watchable Wildlife
have designed a new book
to help show some of the
prime spots to look for
certain animals. The book
obviously does not guarantee
the reader will, in fact, see
described animal. Rather it is
a guide to areas where certain animals frequent.
The book does its best to cover the entire state, breaking it down
into seven geographical regions, including not only the Adirondacks
but also New York City. Each region is categorized by three types of
viewing; Premier, Great, and Good. It is quick and easy to locate an
area, as it is color coded by region. The areas that are shown include
a description of the habitat, the wildlife you want to watch for,
directions, and a description of trails that are available to explore.
The book also features beautiful full color photography on just about
every page. Animals have keen senses, so the book offers helpful
hints on how to watch for the animals, listen for them and, as always,
learn from them.
New York Wildlife Viewing is not meant to replace some of the more
in-depth animal guide books, but instead offer a user-friendly guide
to some of the amazing animals who have made New York State their
home. LOCALadk is recommending this as a great book to stash in
your car or home and source as a quick reference to what wild animals
may live in your neck of the woods or the woods you are visiting.
