32 Fall 2014 LOCALadk Mixes & Muddles 2166 Saranac Ave, Lake Placid PanDolceLakePlacid.com Fresh Weekly Drink Menu & Live Music Every Night Starting at 6:30pm 518-302-5005 RESTAURANT & BAR Raquette River Brewing 11 Balsam Street #2 Tupper Lake, N.Y. 12986 518-420-8461 www.raquetteriverbrewing.com Raquette River Brewing is located in Tupper Lake and opened its doors in 2013. Brewer and owner Mark Jessie has over 20 years experience. After introducing his good friend Joe Hockey to the art of beer making, the two decided to start their own brewery. They use local hops when they can, which amounts to a few batches a year. Mark is happy to report they have strong local support, and they have also proven popular with visitors from the west who are happy to have the chance to sample and buy fresh-brewed beer. "Fresh" is a term I heard several times when I was there. It's obvious that brewing fresh beer is more important than brewing large quantities. At 2 bbl (A bbl is a Beer Barrel; 1 bbl is equal to 31 gallons) Raquette River Brewing is known as a nano brewery, which is any brewery under 4 bbl. It's a full-time job for Mark, but one that is made a little easier with technology, as he can monitor all the gauges remotely if he wants to go home to get some sleep. Brewing beer is a labor of love for Mark and Joe. One signature beer that is produced by Raquette River Brewing is Raquette River Blonde Ale, which uses Centennial and Cascade hops. The Cascade is a medium-strength aroma hop developed by the USDA, which provides a floral and spicy character that is balanced with bitterness. It is the most popular hop used in the U.S. craft brewing industry. The Raquette River Pale Ale uses Cascade hops and is a light but hoppy and flavorful beer, great for the summer. Raquette River Red Ale has U.S. Goldings hops and is a unique, earthy beer with a warm toasty flavor. They also produce an IPA which has four different types of hops, which make for a full bodied, hoppy, but not filling beer.
