Fall 2014 55 LOCALadk are very small and are trailing shrubs - they grow close to the ground. They form roots at their leaf and have many connected stems that create a dense mat of vine like growth. The fruit begins to grow in the summer and ripens by fall. Each stem produces one to three berries which are very easy to pick as well as light and airy because they are partially hollow. Ripe cranberries are red in color and will have an acidic and tart taste to them. Inside the berry you will find small, light brown seeds embedded in the body. The flesh is pinkish white and spongy. Cranberries can help with both kidney and urinary tract function and are high in pectin, beta carotene and Vitamin C. To pick cranberries, I recommend a wide mouth bucket and a good healthy back. Each berry must be picked by hand so the bush doesn't get damaged and with a big bucket it's easy to pick and toss your berries right in. Cranberries can be used in many things such as relish, jams, compote and juice. Freezing the berries is easy and they will last through several seasons giving you the opportunity for year round wild berries. Stillwater Reservoir can be reached from two points, via the Big Moose Road or via the Number 4 Road outside of Lowville, but either way entails a journey of at least 10 miles on dirt road. Once in Stillwater, you will find the Stillwater Hotel run by Joe and Marian Romano. They provide a full restaurant and bar along with hotel rooms. The Stillwater Shop is run by Frank and Jackie Rudolph along with their kids, Tyler and Emily. They provide boat rentals, fuel, snacks and a lot of good advice on how to navigate the reservoir. They also run the Northern Lights B&B. New York State provides an excellent boat launch. If you make the paddle down the reservoir to Beaver River, you will find the Norridgewock Hotel run by the Thompson family. It offers a restaurant, hotel, cabins, and boat taxi. They also run a popular Riverboat cruise that includes lunch at the restaurant. Beaver River Lodge is run by business partners Barry Miller and Jose Diaz. They operate a bar and hotel service. It is best to call ahead to both places for reservations and hours of operation. Whether you come for the cranberries, or just for some beautiful fall camping, Stillwater in the fall is a treasure trove of islands, bays, cliffs and long sandy beaches. Due to the size of the Reservoir, conditions can be variable so be prepared for the weather, the wind can both help and hinder you.
