LOCALadk Madeleine Bialke is an Adirondack landscape painter. She vacations at a family camp on Stillwater Reservoir, and the area has heavily influenced her artistic evolution. Bialke received her B.F.A. from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2013, where she developed her expressive approach to painting the northern wild. She depicts scenes that evoke a silent power. More information can be found at mbialke.com. Madeleine HELEN SMITH CAIRNS is Professor Emerita at the City University of New York (CUNY). She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psycholinguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught for over 30 years at Queens College (in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders) and the CUNY Graduate Center. She has authored or edited six books (with another in the works). Helen lives in Ray Brook with her husband Chuck and (seriously adorable) Shih Tzu Leander. HELEN RHYANN KING is a soon to be fifth grader. Besides recess and P.E., her favorite subjects in school are math and writing. In her spare time she hangs out with her twin brother Carter and their giant mastiff Samson, plays soccer, and enjoys arts and crafts. Rhyann JERRY JENKINS is an ecologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society Adirondack Program and has fifty years of field experience in the Northeast. He is the author of the Adirondack Atlas, Acid Rain in the Adirondacks, and Climate Change in the Adirondacks. Currently,with support from the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Northern Forest Atlas Foundation, he is writing and illustrating a series of nine books about the ecology and natural history of the northern forest region. Jerry WYNDE KATE REESE AND TAMMY LOEWY met in 2001 while working at The Cliffhanger Cafe in Keene Valley. Sharing a passion for healthy, delicious food and love of the outdoors, they instantly became friends. In the spring of 2004 they started Green Goddess Foods, an organic and locally sourced prepared foods business. In 2007 they purchased the Natural Food Store in Lake Placid and changed the name to Green Goddess Natural Foods. In January 2013 they expanded and re-opened their store in its current location at 2051 Saranac Ave. The store now includes The Scape Cafe, Deli, and Catering Service. Reese holds a BS in Holistic Nutrition and offers nutrition counseling services, while Loewy manages the cafe and catering aspects of the business. The mission of Green Goddess is to provide healthy and delicious organic and local foods to North Country residents and vacationing customers. Tammy & Wynde SARAH HART is a freelance writer and editor, and an instructor at Paul Smith's College. Sarah grew up overseas, but came to the Adirondacks at age 12 to attend North Country School. She has loved this area deeply ever since. Work and education took her elsewhere for many years, but two years ago Sarah was able to return to the North Country, and has never been happier. She particularly enjoys cross country skiing, biking the back roads, and trying to learn how to grow vegetables in our so-short-and-sweet summer season. Sarah TOM DWYER is a freelance writer/photographer based out of Marietta, N.Y., near Syracuse. His landscape photography is featured in venues as diverse as the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, Gallery 54 in Skaneateles, N.Y., Image City Photography Gallery in Rochester, N.Y., and arts shows throughout Central and Western New York. He is an avid backpacker, camper, and kayaker. In the Adirondacks he leads Adirondack nature photography workshops, including this year's series of three workshops sponsored by the Adirondack Museum. Tom ANGELA SMITH is a certified business advisor with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Working with seasoned entrepreneurs and bright-eyed start-ups is a dream job. Her mission is to fight tenaciously to help her clients reach their goals and have an absolute blast on a daily basis while doing it.
