I have always found starting a new job exciting and
nerve-wracking. And, as I have learned recently, those
feelings are especially intense when that new job is
the family business.
After my husband and I tied the knot in 2012, we
discussed the possibility of returning to my hometown
in Lake Placid and joining my family's business, the
Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort. My grandparents, Wini
and Stefi Holderied, started the resort 40 years ago in
1974, shortly after emigrating from Germany.
I sat down with my grandmother to talk it through.
She laid out her hopes and expectations for me, as
the newcomer. Because I am the first of the grandkids
to join the business, my grandmother stressed that I
would need to set a precedence.
The lasting, impacting legacy of the Holderied family as told from
a third-generation perspective .
