Who's Who LOCALadk 6 Winter 2014 SARAH HART is a freelance writer, and editor, and an instructor at Paul Smith's College. Sarah grew up overseas, but came to the Adirondacks at age 12 to attend North Country School. She has loved this area deeply ever since. Work and education took her elsewhere for many years, but two years ago Sarah was able to return to the North Country, and has never been happier. She particularly enjoys cross country skiing, biking the back roads, and trying to learn how to grow vegetables in our so-short-and- sweet summer season. Sarah ANNE ANNE BREWER lives in Lake Placid with her husband, Peter Evans, his daughter Ellie, and their dog Juni. She is an avid outdoor sports enthusiast, kayaker, hiker, skier, photographer, and traveler. She has a passion for Central and South America and enjoys visiting places that are off the beaten path. Anne earned a degree in International Business and Communications from SUNY Brockport. In addition to being the Managing Editor for LOCALadk, Anne guides for Adventures in Good Company, and operates her own summer business: Placid Waters Kayaking. JOHN DIGIACOMO lives in Lake Placid with his wife Michele. In 2009, following a series of life altering events, he made a decision to leave his position as a corporate executive and pursue a career as a professional free-lance photographer. This decision has afforded him the opportunity to pursue on a full-time basis his passion for photography, as well as his love of the outdoors. John can usually be found, with camera gear in tow, hiking, paddling, or skiing throughout the Adirondacks. John periodically, leads workshops and tours through his Company, Placid Times Photography (www.PlacidTimesPhotography.com). As an instructor, his goal is to create a comfortable atmosphere affording participants the opportunity to enhance their own individual technical skills, while moving beyond their creative comfort zone. John MELANIE LEVI is 16, and founder of the Cousins That Care. She is a native of Inlet, New York and attends the Town of Webb High School as a junior. Throughout the year she keeps an honor roll average and participates in many school activities. She plays on the Varsity Soccer team in the fall, Varsity Basketball team during winter, and Varsity Softball team in spring. Melanie is a member of Varsity Club, Key Club, and president of the Travel Club. She also plays in the school band as first seat alto saxophone and sings in the school chorus. On weekends and during the summer, Melanie keeps busy by working three jobs: landscaping for Zone 3, cleaning summer cottages at Eagle Bay Villas, and waitressing at The Ole Barn. Melanie David McCahill is an avid fan of any pursuit which involves snow, mountains, mud or singletrack-- an outcome he attributes to an upbringing in Lake Placid in the heart of the Adirondack playground. David is currently a ski jumping and cross-country ski coach with the New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF), and serves as the Academic Director for their new Winter Term program. Dave BETHANY GARRETSON, an Environmental Studies instructor at Paul Smith's College, got her first taste of the Adirondacks from fishing trips with her grandparents. She grew up in Cherry Valley, New York, a small farming community west of Albany. After working four years in wilderness therapy as a field instructor, Bethany studied conservation models in India, Namibia, Nepal, and the United States as part of her Master's in Conservation and Community Development. She's an avid hiker and believes in the empowering and healing nature of the outdoors. Bethany lives in Paul Smith's with her husband.
