changing locations, I will keep the camera in my camera bag and thoroughly dry my tripod legs. I also keep both the camera and my tripod as far away from the heaters as possible. When I am photographing international sporting events a designated "Cold Room" is usually provided outside the press room. This room allows my gear to stay cold (avoiding condensation build-up) while transmiting images to editors. At one event I covered, a photographer not familiar with working in sub-zero temperatures brought his two cameras into the press room and ultimately missed the first ten minutes of the next event due to condensation build- up quickly turning to ice on his lenses. The same principles apply to you. If you are going to take a short break from the elements (IE. Stopping for breakfast stop) leave your camera equipment in the car or outside where you can keep an eye on it. To see more of John's work go to www. PlacidTimesPhotography.com When photographing skiing or snowboarding events, secure your equipment in a safe area so that it will not interfere with other skiers. Also, try and stay out of the competitors fall line. This will protect both you and the competitors should they fall. When photographing wildlife, many hours will be spent standing or sitting around. I would recommend insulated boots designed for extremely cold temperatures. Also place a piece of foam padding between your feet and the ground for added warmth. (I use a piece of foam cut from an old sleeping pad).
