important to have community, especially in a place that's hard to live. Visitors may see the Adirondacks
as a vacation land. However, as a permanent place of residence, it's hard work. This territory in which
we inhabit was passed over by many, including the Native Americans, who fondly referred to it as
Couchsachraga, meaning "The Dismal Wilderness."
It was a hardy lot of people who settled the Adirondacks and it's a hardy lot of people who live here
today. Men who will give you a lift when you're snowed in, but explain on the car ride they're not much
for chit chat, women who can handle an ax, and people with the tools to harvest a moose in the back of
their trucks.
The Canada geese on Mirror Lake will fly away, heading south for warming weather. The tourist walking
along main street will throw away the street map and drive home. The people who stay are part of a
community like no other. Because in the face of hardships, people come together. The Adirondacks may
be known for the wilderness, the cry of the loon, and 46 high peaks, but remember, people live here too.
