you could help yourself to a cold beer from the cooler or mix your own cocktail, keep tally in a black and white note pad, and at the end of the night add up your tab and leave the money at the bar. Too much of a good thing proved to be too much for some and now the bar, although decorated with the same island charm and countless shells, does not always run on the honor system. They still, however, play great island music performed by local musicians who always have the crowd dancing in the sand. If you are fortunate enough to be there on BBQ night, then count yourself lucky and know you have really experienced Ivan's Stress Free bar. I have met some of the nicest, most interesting, and also some of the oddest, people at this little beach bar. With two days to soak up the sun and island vibe, there is plenty to do. Jost Van Dyke is a small island, but there are hiking trails, snorkeling opportunities, hammocks, beach bars, great swimming, paddling destinations, and lots of soft white sand to lie on. Do something or do nothing, either way you will be enjoying "island time" and piles of snow won't even be a thought. The last day means it's time to shake the sand out of your tent, pack up your gear, say goodbye to friends you no doubt made at Ivan's, and start paddling back to St John. If you planned well and have a few extra days, rent a jeep and tour the island's amazing white sand beaches. Make sure to check out the local scene in Coral Bay. Caution: going to the island of St John can be addicting. I took my first trip in 2002 - and have gone back every year since! LOCALadk
