Now we donate to large charities and to local families who have sick
family members or who are having a hard time. We also donated
to Zippy's Crusade For Kids, a charity snowmobile ride, featuring
NASCAR celebrities, which again was hosted at The Ole Barn. We
attended local festivities, for example Arts In The Park, Boat Shows,
and Fall Festival where we sold our handmade bracelets and other
small items. For every year since, we have been working very hard
to raise as much money as we can by hosting spaghetti dinners and
pancake breakfasts at The Ole Barn. For the past two years, we have
been putting on a 5K Run/Walk, both of which have been very fun and
successful.
In December of 2012, the tragic Sandy Hook School Shooting
occurred. Our group quickly wrote letters to the families of all twenty
victims, enclosing a donation to help with anything they may need.
We received a response from the family of victim Charlotte Bacon.
Her family had received many letters and donations similar to ours
and had created a ceremony where all who donated were invited to
Newtown, Connecticut. There, they had an award to present, The
Charlotte Bacon Act of Kindness Award, that would be given to the
person or group who have showed an exceptional deal of compassion
towards the disaster. We were invited to attend the ceremony, but
could not, so we made do and video conferenced over Skype. The
award ceremony began and we learned that we, The Cousins That
Care, had won the award. Winning that award was an honor and we
were very excited.
