mountain forests and lakes, picturesque farm
country where many Amish care for the land using
traditional methods, and the unique northern boreal
bogs in St. Lawrence County. The hope is that this
immersive experience, coupled with the context
and information provided by WCS naturalists, will
give those who participate in Cycle Adirondacks
a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for,
our North Country ecosystems. Understanding and
appreciation underlie the sorts of decisions and
support that could be instrumental in protecting
our North Country natural environment.
A key component of this area's natural history is
the influence that changing economic activity has
had on the landscape. Riders will pass abandoned
mills, factories, canals, and mines. They will also see
thriving small-scale farming and newly booming-
businesses. The story of the economy and the
environment has always been closely intertwined in
the Adirondacks, and telling the details of this story
is an important element in the Cycle Adirondacks
programming.
