LOCALadk Spring 2015 LOCALadk Magazine 7 Helen HELEN SMITH CAIRNS is Professor Emerita at the City University of New York (CUNY). She received her Ph.D. in Experimental Psycholinguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught for over 30 years at Queens College (in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Disorders) and the CUNY Graduate Center. She has authored or edited six books (with another in the works). Helen lives in Ray Brook with her husband Chuck and (seriously adorable) Shih Tzu Leander. JERRY JENKINS is an ecologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society Adirondack Program and has fifty years of field experience in the Northeast. He is the author of the Adirondack Atlas, Acid Rain in the Adirondacks, and Climate Change in the Adirondacks. Currently,with support from the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Northern Forest Atlas Foundation, he is writing and illustrating a series of nine books about the ecology and natural history of the northern forest region. Jerry Susan Friedmann, a big city girl, originally from London, England, who's fallen in love with the Adirondacks, and for over 20 years has made Lake Placid her home. When she's not working at being an entrepreneur, yoga, kayaking, biking, and skiing are her recreational passions. In her professional life she's an internationally recognized expert and "how to" coach who helps companies with their niche marketing strategies. A prolific author, Susan has written 14 books including her international best-seller, Riches in Niches: How to Make it BIG in a Small Market. She's appeared on a variety of radio talk shows, and as a guest expert on CNN's Financial Network and Bloomberg's Small Business. www.richesinniches.com Susan KIM VERSTRINGHE is a more recent transplant to the Adirondacks. She grew up in the Finger Lakes area of New York where her love for the outdoors began. Pursuing her affinity for the outdoor life, she worked as a river guide, ski patroller, and trip leader for various outdoor programs. She used to be a big dog person but has changed her tune since adopting two adorable dachshunds which are great little dogs to explore the Adirondacks with. She is a Licensed Acupuncturist with a practice in Lake Placid. Kim Tammy & Wynde WYNDE KATE REESE and TAMMY LOEWY met in 2001 while working at The Cliffhanger Cafe in Keene Valley. Sharing a passion for healthy, delicious food and love of the outdoors, they instantly became friends. In the spring of 2004 they started Green Goddess Foods, an organic and locally sourced prepared foods business. In 2007 they purchased the Natural Food Store in Lake Placid and changed the name to Green Goddess Natural Foods. In January 2013 they expanded and re-opened their store in its current location at 2051 Saranac Ave. The store now includes The Scape Cafe, Deli, and Catering Service. Reese holds a BS in Holistic Nutrition and offers nutrition counseling services, while Loewy manages the cafe and catering aspects of the business. The mission of Green Goddess is to provide healthy and delicious organic and local foods to North Country residents and vacationing customers.
