job arranging the music for their particular standard and available instruments.
What's the biggest challenge preparing for this performance?
Without a doubt, having 220 students at different levels of musical ability. So far I have given 13 children
a small solo role, and as much as I would like to give more children that kind of attention, there simply
isn't the space.
What advice would you give to the kids who look up to you for inspiration?
Two things. First, follow what makes you happy and gives you joy. Second, take time to practice and forge
a relationship with your instrument so you truly enjoy the moment of music making. I hope to inspire them
to rise above their challenges, and really live their dreams.
What's the idea behind the film you're making alongside the project?
The film, which we hope will air on Public Television, traces the stories of the children involved in the
performance. It voices how music education can benefit children from any background. We want that
message to come through unobtrusively but yet powerfully, so it can help school districts embrace music
education.
