Summer 2015 LOCALadk Magazine 21 LOCALadk wasn't carrying a heavy backpack. After a few miles, we stopped to brush our teeth alongside Canary Pond. There were a bunch of big boulders on the lakeshore. We climbed all over them. Once we got moving again, we crossed a big beaver meadow and found the trail again on the other side. JESSICA: The NPT includes an abundance of bridges. The more impres- sive ones have proven to be some of the kids' most enduring memories of the trail. CASEY: We reached a bridge over West Branch Sacandaga River. It stretched forever! It was about 200 feet long with a small island in the middle. We stopped for a snack on that island. There was even a path to a small beach! On the other end of the bridge, there was an enormous old fireplace, chimney and all! We climbed up it, down it, and even in it! I don't think Watson really liked that part. JESSICA: We planned a food resupply in Piseco on our third day of hik- ing. Since Kevin and I were carrying all the food for four people plus a dog, this seemed like a fairly simple way to lighten our load during the first few days. We also thought the kids would enjoy having a little "civili- zation" break. CASEY: We finally got to Piseco and stopped at Casey's General Store. Unfortunately, it wasn't named after me. There, we each got a candy bar and a cold treat. As we were walking along the road, someone offered us a ride. We didn't take it though, since we were HIKING the whole trail. We arrived at the Irondequoit Inn: that was where we got our re-supply! Dogs weren't allowed, so Mom stayed outside with Watson while Elliot, Dad, and I went for the re-supply box. We also got pancakes! They were very yummy. Jenna Demayo
