42 Spring 2016 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk Sandra Hildreth, painter Saranac Lake Website: sandrahildreth.com A resident of the region for 45 years, with the past 12 years in Saranac Lake, Sandra Hildreth has fully embraced being an Ad- irondack artist, focusing on oil and watercolor paintings of Ad- irondack landscapes, plein air paintings and mandalas. "I love where I live and I paint what I love: the wild tangled woods, scenic lakes and ponds, the rugged mountains, the hemlock, white pine, tamarack, wild orchids, trillium, deer, bear, coyotes, glacial erratics, alpenglow and snow. I don't just paint the Adiron- dacks — I experience it," she said. "My paintings are about my interactions with the wild, natural environment and my belief in living in harmony with and taking care of it. I'd like to think my paintings communicate the importance of protecting our wild places so they will continue to exist for future generations." As a founding member of Saranac Lake ArtWorks and the organiz- er of the Adirondack Plein Air Festival, Hildreth is instrumental in the Saranac Lake arts scene. As a member of the Adirondack Art- ists Guild Gallery in Saranac Lake, her work is always on display there. Other area galleries that show her work include the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, View Arts Center, the Paul Smith's Col- lege VIC Gallery and Giant Mountain Studio in Schroon Lake. In addition, she also submits work to juried competitions and cur- rently has a painting in a national juried show in the Rice Gallery in Overland, Kan. In addition to overseeing the Adirondack Plein Air Festival (which is now in its 8th year and taking place Aug. 15- 20), Hildreth also travels to compete in plein air painting events around the country and has shown work in Canandaigua, Morris- town, and Hudson, N.Y., in Pennsylvania, Maine, and in Telluride and Aspen, Colo.
