Fall 2016 LOCALadk Magazine 40 LOCALadk Tupper Lake Triad This family-friendly challenge was started in 2015 and includes summiting 3 mountain peaks in Tupper Lake. This was created to offer a fun challenge that can be completed in a short amount of time and by people with limited hiking experience. All trails are DEC-maintained, and each summit offers a view of surrounding mountains and lakes. The peaks include Mount Arab with a climb- able fire tower - 2 miles RT, Coney Mountain - 2.2 RT; and Good- man - 3.4 RT. This last mountain peak is named after Civil Rights activist Andrew Goodman. There are two patches, summer and winter, as well as a patch your dog can earn. Chester Challenge Kicked off in 2015, the Chester Challenge offers a variety of hikes. Eight trailheads offer a total of 11 different hikes, total- ling 20 miles of trails. Completion of six hikes earns a patch and a pin. The hikes include Chester Creek Trails - 1.2 RT, Meade and Beckman Mountain - 2.1 RT, Dynamite Hill - 2.6 RT, Kipp - 1.9 RT, Palmer Pond Trail - 1.5 RT, Stewart Mountain - 0.84 RT, Cougar Nature Trails - .9 RT and Green Hill and Catamount Mountain. Indian Lake Challenge 4-3-2-1 Hikes New in 2016 is the Indian Lake Challenge which involves hiking 10 different trails with varying degrees of difficulty. The Chamber of Commerce has created a map that denotes a total of 37 differ- ent hikes that are all color-coded for difficulty. Easy - Green Moderate - Yellow Difficult - Red Hike 4 of 27 Trails Hike 3 of 7 Trails Hike 2 of 6 Trails and, to finish the challenge, hike either Snowy Mountain or Blue Mountain Cranberry 50 Cranberry Lake is the third largest lake in the Adirondacks. This challenge is to hike the 50-mile loop trail that offers rivers, ponds, forest and mountains. It's a 3-4 day hike. Options for camping in- clude a few first come, first served lean-tos and plenty of spots to pitch a tent.
