7 Fall 2016 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk Eric ERIC ADSIT can't cross a bridge without looking for a river beneath it. While his mailing address is in Lowville, he lives on the rivers, trails, and mountains of the ADK and beyond, taking photos, climbing things, and writing about his experiences. As a whitewater kayaker for nearly half his life, and the founder of the online magazine 'The Dirtbag's Guide to Whitewater," he is now assembling a guidebook on northern NY rivers. Jim JIM FOX lives in the Adirondacks with his wife Carol. Her family's history reaches back to 1901 on Stillwater Reservoir. They moved from Marcellus after Jim retired as a school psychologist in Baldwinsville. Yesteryear outdoor pursuits included camping, trapping, and spelunking in Italy's Abbruzi mountains. Growing up on the Delaware River taught him the rare sport of hooking suckers through the ice in winter, and spearing eels at night in the summer. Nighttime raccoon and fox hunting also kept him out of trouble. Hiking, biking, hunting and recruiting fire tower restoration volunteers are current diversions REBECCA STEFFAN is an Adirondack transplant who moved to the Saranac Lake area straight out of college and forgot to leave. An avid fan of playing outside, she spends her spare time running backcountry roads, planning adventures, and mountain biking. In her not-so- down time, she is the Senior PR Manager and Content Marketing Manager at Adworkshop, an employee-owned company, based in Lake Placid. She enjoys traveling just as much as she enjoys returning home to the Adirondacks, and her favorite outdoor activity involves a teepee, a beach, and a good book. Rebecca Anne ANNE BREWER lives in Lake Placid with her husband, Peter Evans, his daughter Ellie, and their dog Juni. She is an avid outdoor sports enthusiast, kayaker, hiker, skier, photographer, and traveler. She has a passion for Central and South America and enjoys visiting places that are off the beaten path. Anne earned a degree in International Business and Communications from SUNY Brockport. In addition to being the Managing Editor for LOCALadk, Anne guides for Adventures in Good Company, and operates her own summer business: Placid Waters Kayaking. Who's Who BETHANY GARRETSON, an environmental studies instructor at Paul Smith's College, got her first taste of the Adirondacks on fishing trips with her grandparents. She spends her time outside of the classroom hiking, traveling and writing. Bethany has completed the Northville-Placid Trail, three rounds of the 46 High Peaks and is an Ultra 6er. She's passionate about community change models and advocating for environmental and social justice. Every day she finds beauty in the natural world around her and excitement in life. She lives in Paul Smiths with her husband Andrew. Bethany Kathy KATHY SCOTT has canoed tributaries of the Churchill River in Saskatchewan, the Green River in Utah, and LaVerendrye Park in Quebec. She initially moved to the Adirondacks to work for the 1980 Winter Olympics. Kathy co-founded and managed St. Regis Canoe Outfitters. In this capacity, she outfitted and guided trips in the Adirondacks. During the winters, she organized and guided two-week canoe trips along the Florida Everglades 100 mile Wilderness Waterway. She raised her two children in the Saranac Lake area, where they participated in many outdoor activities. Kathy now resides and works in coastal Maine, and enjoys returning to the people and the beauty of the Adirondacks. KIM RIELLY is the director of communications for the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), the destination marketing organization responsible for promoting a huge chunk of the Adirondacks. An almost- lifelong resident of the region, she grew up in Westport and now resides in Moriah with her husband Kevin Boyle and dog Katie. She enjoys paddling, hiking, cycling, motorcycling and skiing, and according to Instagram, taking selfies with her dog. But mostly, she's pleased and proud that it's her job to promote the amazing Adirondack destination experience for the economic benefit of those of us who are fortunate to call the region home. Kim
