One of the aspects of the Ice Job that doesn't get discussed is how green the result is. For many years
ice was cut and sold to campers at the local state campgrounds to keep their milk, eggs and hot dogs
cold in their coolers. Then the New York State Health Department determined that the ice was unfit
for public consumption. Campers would now have to rely on ice produced in the city, packaged in
plastic bags, trucked up to the Adirondacks and kept in refrigerated freezers powered by a constant
supply of electricity. It may be ironic that the effect of decisions like that has lead to global climate
change, which may eventually eliminate the ice job itself.
