51 Winter 2016 LOCALadk Magazine Jerry is now proudly sharing the newly released website. This latest project is a collaboration backed by the Northern Forest Atlas Foun- dation and its chair Ed McNeil, the Adirondack Program of the Wild- life Conservation Society (WCS) and its director Zoe Smith, as well as many donors. Jenkins, who has been working on this for the past 45 years, says that the three main goals are to • Create a library of photos and air videos showing the landscapes, plants, and animals of the northern forest • Create photographic and diagrammatic atlases, both paper and digital, for plants and landscapes • Design and produce a series of modern field guides to plants and ecology The project is currently midway through a 10 year time frame and will be released via the web in a series of books, charts, digital applica- tions, photography, and posters documenting the habitats and eco- systems of the Northern Forest of New York, Vermont, New Hamp- shire and Maine. Resources and information can be used by existing education programs and for aiding in field studies. Jenkins describes the Atlas Project's website: "It currently has search- able image libraries, mostly of high-resolution, stacked, studio pho- tographs of mosses, sedges, and woody plants; ecological and iden- tification charts and graphics; low-altitude, high-definition air videos; articles and blogs; and previews of books and digital products, some for sale and some free, that will be available in the next few months." It is a straightforward site, little text, no clutter, but with several nice features. Image searches can be done by expanding trees of taxa and LOCALadk has been fortunate to share the work of ecologist Jerry Jenkins. He educated us on the formation of the Adirondacks - and the unique landscape within. He explained how the variety of conifers and deciduous trees live and thrive inside the park. He demonstrated all of this with extensive scientific research, excellent photography, and professionally designed graphics that are clear and easy to understand. He also clearly impressed upon us his passion for the park and for creating a medium to share this knowledge. Northern Forest Atlas By Anne Brewer Ed McNeil Jerry Jenkins
