Winter 2016 LOCALadk Magazine 6 LOCALadk I am the youngest of seven. I learned to ski when I was four. My parents would take all seven of us to McCauley Mountain in Old Forge almost every winter weekend. There were no formal lessons. My brothers and sister gave me the motivation to ski with them and to progress up the mountain. Mighty Mite to Rope Tow to Mac's Back, eventually riding the chair to the top. We arrived at the mountain in our 1970's Winnebago. My Dad would line up the younger kids on the bench seat and start lacing up our ski boots. The older kids quickly put on their ski suits, buckled their boots and headed out the door to ski on runs they had already mastered. My Mom was helping the boot lacing assembly line while simultaneously making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for nine lunches. They worked as a team and raced the "first track" clock to get us out the door and on the mountain. I clomped down the metal stairs of the Winnebago in my red ski suit trailing my brother in his blue suit. Thankfully today the ski outfits have changed, I am no longer wearing a full body quilted red ski suit. What hasn't changed is the desire to get out skiing first tracks and to master the next downhill run. Today my own family embrac- es the winter season and looks forward to the many different outdoor opportunities the Adirondacks have to offer. After last year's "winter that wasn't " we at LOCALadk are hopeful and praying to Ullr for plenty of snow. If you are a skier, skater, snowboarder, ice climber, snowmobiler, ice fisherman, winter camper, dog sled musher, snowshoer, etc we hope you have a safe and amazing winter. Get outside and enjoy winter in the Adirondacks like it is supposed to be, cold, white and full of endless adventure. We are definitely PRO SNOW! LOCALadk and its Keeping It LOCAL campaign will be making a donation to the Bark Eater Trail Alliance. We appreciate the hard work and many volunteer hours used for creating and maintaining area trails. Please enjoy our winter issue and always let us know what you think, Happy Winter, Anne Brewer Editor Jeremy Ackerman Message From The Editor
