60 Spring 2017 LOCALadk Magazine LOCALadk At John Dillon Park this past summer, Angie was able to ma- neuver around the campground in her motorized wheelchair on the trails of fine-crushed stone and over the wooden boardwalks. The ramp leading up to her lean-to allowed her to get inside and transfer herself to an elevated wooden sleep- ing platform. She often drove her motorized wheelchair onto a handi- capped-accessible dock, and took in the panoramic view of Grampus Lake. The staff provided tours of Grampus Lake aboard the facility's pontoon boat, which was operated from an accessible dock. The ramp at the end of the dock allows people to drive a wheelchair right onto the boat. Canoes and kayaks can also be taken out on the lake from another dock with separate removable wood bumpers and a carpeted deck to allow for ease of transfer into the boats. "They are right on top with compliance," said Dorothy. "Some places advertise that they are totally accessible, but that's not always the case. At this campground, everything is completely accessible for us." Angie and Dorothy said they also appreciated the special attention from the staff, who provided a wide range of as- sistance, such as delivering firewood daily and transporting camping gear to their site.
