If you have plans to paddle on the waters of the Adirondacks, consider some of the following books and maps: The Adirondack Paddler's Guide Book and Map is a compre- hensive set including the book Adirondack Paddler's Guide: Finding Your Way by Canoe and Kayak in the Adirondack Park and the Adirondack Paddler's Map: For Canoe and Kayak Travel, both by Dave Cilley. The guide gives route descriptions, mileage, portages, esti- mated paddling time, difficulty levels, wildness ratings, and directions (including to put in and take out). It also includes a detailed map of each particular area. It covers areas such as the Saranac Lakes, St. Regis Wilderness Area, Santa Clara Tract, Five Ponds Wilderness, Whitney Wilderness, Raquette River, and Cranberry Lake Wild Forest. Other helpful books and maps include A Kayaker's Guide to Lake George The Saratoga Region & Great Sacandaga Lake, by Russell Dunn; Adirondack Paddling 60 Great Flatwater Adven- tures, by Phil Brown; Paddlers and Hiker Map Lows Lake & Bog River by Raquette River Outfitters and additional maps by Dave Cilley that include the Saranacs and the Fulton Chain. The Bookshelf Author William Schiele grew up spending summers in the Adirondacks. He loved all the things the region has to offer: swimming in lakes, hik- ing trails, and camping out on beaches. Time spent exploring this unique wilderness, year after year, led to treasured memories with family and friends. He did grow to love the absence of one thing: the television. No TV was kind of a bummer at first, but books took the place of the TV when it came time to chill. When they had captivating plots, engaging charac- ters, and thrilling cliffhangers, books were better than TV. William's love of thriller novels developed in summers spent at the remote family camp in the Adirondacks, devoid of electricity. Today William Schiele is a published author and Tears of the Assassin is his debut novel. It is a thriller that takes the reader into the heart and mind of a desperate man forced to become an assassin, only to be betrayed by his employer. The assassin must stop the destruction of the US economy, and also save the one person he truly loves from a horrendous death. Wealth and power faces off with wits and determination, while the fate of the US dollar and the life of an innocent person hang in the balance. This is an excellent book for an Adirondack summer read. LOCALadk-ers are sure to recognize the influence of the Adirondacks on this story.
