gloves and socks dr ying nearby. In the kitchen area, there is a sink and propane stove. The table and bench are handmade and all lighting is propane or solar. In the corner, a collection of old photos is displayed, one with a man proudly holding a large brook trout. These photos tell of past caretakers and DEC personnel. A book shelf holds classics such as Into the Wild and multiple field guides. Outside there is a barn and outhouse. Mount Colden rises across the lake. The role of a caretaker is multifunctional. They are respon- sible for trail work, and the care and upkeep of the cabin, lean-tos, and bridges. During their shifts, Colden caretakers patrol the area daily and educate hikers and backpackers about Leave No Trace ethics. At any point during their shift, they can be called upon for a search and rescue. Nate de- scribes the pace of rescues as "Either feast or famine – three in a day or weeks without one."
